      <image:title>Projects - Per Aspera Podcast</image:title>
<image:caption>Created by the Kansas 250 Commission to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, telling stories about the people and places of Kansas that connect to themes in the Declaration of Independence. Kansas’s state motto, Ad Astra Per Aspera - “To the stars through difficulty” - captures that tension. The key word is per: THROUGH. Through disagreement over consent. Through conflicts between liberty and equality. Through laws that upheld injustice … and the movements that challenged them. How have Kansans wrestled with the unfinished revolution of 1776, testing American ideals in moments of crisis, conflict, and change? My Role: Director, Writer, Host, Historian</image:caption>

Each episode features discussions with artists and other individuals involved in the Mother And … exhibition, which runs from September 5 to November 21st, 2025, at the Leedy-Voulkos Art Center in Kansas City, Missouri. One of the foundational films of the gangster genre, The Public Enemy (1931) made James Cagney a star and pushed the boundaries of violence in movies. A review from the Kansas City Times called this movie and other gangster films of the early 1930s "misleading, contaminating, and often demoralizing to children and youth." So come have your morals corrupted by this classic of gangster cinema.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of the highly successful Warner Brothers "backstage musicals" of the early 1930s, "Gold Diggers of 1933" may appear to be about showgirls looking for husbands, but it's really about female friendship and camaraderie in hard times. Senses of Cinema describes this movie as "Grit 'n' Glitz" - the glitz of Busby Berkeley's kaleidoscopic dance numbers and the grit of getting by in the middle of the Great Depression. Come see Kansas City's own Ginger Rogers, along with Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, and Aline MacMahon sing and dance their way through their troubles in one of the most touted musical of the Pre-Code era.</image:caption>

This was Mae West's last movie before Hollywood censors clamped down on her highly suggestive, innuendo-filled style of sex comedy. When asked in 1933 what kind of picture it was, Mae West answered "It's about a gal who loses her reputation and never misses it!"</image:caption>
